Music is a game mechanic that allows the player to play songs using instruments. Songs can be imported into the game using ABC notation. This allows players the ability to share songs, or search for songs others have composed online. Starbound's 2 Year Anniversary! Today is a special day for the team here, as it marks Starbound’s (official) 2 Year Anniversary since 1.0 and the game’s full release on Steam. Since then we’ve had a few major updates (woo Mechs!) and are looking ahead to the future of Starbound, including the upcoming Xbox One release. Starbound Music & Soundtrack. Space exploration is at your fingertips in this sandbox adventure game. Traverse an entire universe in your own ship and scavenge whatever you discover. Craft your own kingdom, complete quests for extraterrestrials, and go planet-hopping in the infinite world of Starbound. The Starbound soundtrack was composed. About The Starbound Orchestral OST contains all tracks written and produced by Curtis Schweitzer. The soundtrack contains 54 tracks including experimental tracks not available in the finished game. Solatrus also contributed to the Starbound OST, and sells his tracks separately at music.solatrus.com/album/selections-from-starbound.
The easiest way to connect to friends playing Starbound is through your Steam friend list. Simply right click a player's name in your friends list and select 'Join Game'. This will connect you to their in-progress game of Starbound and you'll appear in their universe. There you'll have everything on your ship with you, but anything on planets will appear as it does in their game, not yours.
Alternatively you can select 'Invite to game' which will invite them to join your game with whatever character they're playing with. You must be logged into the game with a character for this option to be available.
After selecting to open Starbound in Steam the option comes up to launch a dedicated server. This will launch starbound_server.exe which hosts a server from your machine. This allows players to connect to your machine to play Starbound, even if the game is closed (provided the server software is still running).
- Linux (Ubuntu)
- A guide for setting up a linux server can be found here Guide:LinuxServerSetup
If the computer you wish to run the server on has a private IP:
You will need administrative access to all routers between the server and the internet (In a typical home, you may have up to 2 or more. In some cases the modem itself has a built in router that is often overlooked)
You will also likely need administrative access to any firewalls between the server and the internet (In a typical home, this would just be the firewall built into your OS)
Manually
- Run the Starbound server in your Starbound directory. The default location is:
- On 32-bit Windows, C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonstarboundwin32starbound_server.exe
- On 64-bit Windows: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonStarboundwin32starbound_server.exe
- On Mac OS, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound
- On 64-bit Linux, ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/linux/starbound_server (there is no 32-bit Linux server)
- If the Starbound server cannot be found at these locations, then right-click the game in Steam to find the Starbound directory.
To host a server you will need to forward/allow TCP port 21025 on your router and firewall (if enabled)
See the resource section on a Remote Port Testing URLIf the resource reports that the port is closed then you will need to:
- Check your firewall(s) in your OS
- Check your forwarding rules on your router(s)
Locally, you should still be able to connect to your server using the IP 127.0.0.1 (Local Loopback) in the Starbound client, however your friends won't.
Once the remote tool reports that the port is open, then you may give your IP out to your friends to play. To locate your IP use this, or another similar URL
- Load the game, click 'Multiplayer' in the main menu
- Select the character you wish to use
- Server Address: Enter the IP or DNS name you wish to connect to.
- Enter the server account and password if this has been configured, otherwise it can be left blank
- Click on 'Join Server'
- Invite your friends to connect too!
Forming a Party
Once you're in-game, you and your friends will be on different ships and or planets. To CREATE a party, once the friends have joined your game, press the ( + ) icon in the upper right, below your character portrait, and put in your friend('s/s') character nickname. (If you do not know the friend's nickname, check the chat for it, displayed such as: '(Name) Has Connected'), and click on invite. To JOIN a party, once the owner of the party has sent you an invitation, simply click accept, or deny. In a few seconds, you should see the owner's Character Picture, as well as any other Player's Characters pictures that are already in the party.
Note: Once you're in a party with someone, you can warp to their ship by clicking on their portrait.
By editing the file 'starbound.config' in the giraffe_storage directory, players can adjust the settings for the server they're hosting. This method allows players to configure server passwords, ports, default game settings and much more by adjusting values.

Magma planets can only be found orbiting fiery (red) star types. Unlike other Tier 6 planet types (volcanic or scorched) magma planets cannot spawn as satellites of Gas Giant planets. Unless players have a Cooling EPP Upgrade equipped they'll take increasing damage while on the surface from deadly heat.
Coming into contact with lava will apply both burning and melting, depleting player health very quickly. An easy method of traveling across the ocean surface is to bring a large supply of water - when water comes into contact with lava it will change the surface of the lava into magmarock which can be safely walked on.
The lava found on magma planets is infinite, and cannot be drained. All air below surface level is replaced with lava. To build under the ocean and not have lava spawn inside your structure, you must replace the background and foreground with blocks, then remove the foreground blocks and lava will stop spawning.
At night the lava oceans cast a faint glow of light.
Navigation Console
- This dangerously hot planet is chiefly composed of magma. Remember, your resilient spirit is admirable, but it is not flame retardant.
- The planet surface is dangerously hot. Few creatures eek out an existence amongst the planet's vast oceans of magma.
- The beam site is a tiny island isolated in a sea of magma. That you would consider visiting this searingly hot planet speaks volumes of your fortitude.
Materials
The surface layer of magma planets are primarily made up of lava, along with scattered small islands made up of obsidian and ash.
Magma planets are mostly covered in lava which spawns endlessly. There's no way to gather all of the lava found in the oceans.
Ores can be found on surface islands, including copper, silver ore, gold, aegisalt, ferozium, violium and solarium available in small quantities. Most ore is accessible beneath the ocean floor.
Music Tracks
Magma surface biomes use their own sets of music tracks for day and night.
|
|
Magma ocean floor biomes use the Day Tracks plus both Arctic Exploration tracks during the day and the Night Tracks during the night.
|
|
Sub Biomes
Magma planets do not have any sub biomes which appear, and magma does not appear as a sub biome on any other planet types.
Mini Biomes
There are no mini-biomes found on the surface or underwater on magma planets.
Layers
Magma planets deviate somewhat from planetary standards due to being ocean-type planets.
- Space: Asteroids
- Atmosphere: Atmosphere
- Surface: Magma (Primary Biome)
- Note: For ocean-type planets, the surface layer begins at y=1050 and the ocean surface is at y=1150 regardless of planet size.
- Subsurface: Magma Ocean Floor
- Shallow Underground: Tarpit, Mushrooms, Wilderness, Mini Village, Underground 0a, Underground 0b, Underground 1a, or Underground 1b
- Mid Underground: Luminous Caves, Stone Caves, Bone Caves, Ice Caves, Underground 0c, Underground 1c, Underground 1d, Underground 3a, Underground 3b, Underground 3c, or Underground 3d
- Deep Underground: Cell Caves, Flesh Caves, Slime Caves, Underground 0d, Underground 5a, Underground 5b, Underground 5c, or Underground 5d
- Core: Blaststone Core Layer, Magmarock Core Layer, or Obsidian Core Layer
Weather
Weather on magma planets is either clear with a chance of luminous rain, or clear with a chance of luminous rain, in addition to small or large meteorites. Each magma planet has one of these two pools of weather, and it will not change. Magma planets without a meteorite shower chance will never have meteor shower weather.
Weather happens for each planet based on the weights given to the weather types (probability is calculated by dividing a single weight by the sum of all weights); the probability for weather types on magma planets is as follows:
Wild Crops
Chilli plants can be found on magma planets. They'll drop produce and have a chance to drop a seed which can be replanted.
Wildlife
In addition to procedurally generated creatures, there are a variety of unique monsters, bugs and critters found in magma biomes. Some of these are also found in other biomes, while others are unique only to magma biomes. While these unique creatures have a chance to appear on magma planets, they will not all appear on each one. In addition to unique creatures, each biome has multiple types of both procedural ground and flying creatures.
Unique monsters each have combat attacks, and they must first be weakened before capture. Once weakened players can attempt to capture using a capture pod. If successful they can then be released to battle alongside and follow the player.
Critters are smaller non-combat unique creatures which are not capturable using capture pods. They can be captured without weakening them first by using a relocator gun. After releasing a critter from the relocator it will stay in the area it was released into.
Bugs are very small unique creatures which can be captured using a bug net, and are then stored inside placeable jars. Bugs which are captured using a relocator will fly after release instead of being kept inside a jar.
Fishing
There are a number of fish which can only be caught on magma planets using a Fishing Rod. These fish won't be seen swimming in the wild without a fishing lure to attract them. A basic fishing rod will not work on magma planets.
Catching each of these fish will complete their entries in the fishing collection screen.
